The Lawyers are back – and the con is on!
The 2023-24 season marks the return of the fabulous Hamilton Lawyers’ Show – celebrating 40 years since Hamilton’s lawyers invented the genre.
The excitement, intrigue and comedy of the classic 1973 film The Sting, starring Paul Newman, Robert Redford and Robert Shaw have been brilliantly adapted for the stage by one of the finest professional playwrights writing today. The story takes place in depression-era Chicago in a world of small town hustlers and big time bosses. The caper begins when a two bit grifter named Johnny Hooker (Redford) and his pal successfully con a “runner” who, unbeknownst to them, works for a powerful and ruthless rackets boss named Doyle Lonnegan (Shaw). When his pal is murdered by Lonnegan’s thugs, Hooker enlists master con man Henry Gondorf (Newman) and together they devise an elaborate con called the “wire” to get revenge on Lonnegan. It’s a dangerous game that gets even more complicated when the FBI and a hired assassin get involved.
Will Hooker’s scheme pay off? Will Lonnegan get wise to the con? Will the FBI or the assassin blow it all up? Join us and find out!
The Sting is presented in support of the Lawyers’ Legacy for Children / The Ray Harris Fund, and Theatre Aquarius.

History of The Hamilton Lawyers’ Show
2024 Hamilton Lawyers Show – A 40 Year History with Roots in Hamilton
The 2024 production of The Sting will mark 40 years since the first Lawyers Show in Canada. A concept originally developed by Hamilton lawyers, Jeff Manishen and Randy Mazza, Twelve Angry Men was produced in the Hamilton Place studio theatre, directed by Ray Harris.
The concept of The Lawyers’ Show then spread across Canada and the US, supporting local charities and not for profit theatre in Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Ottawa, Halifax, Winnipeg, Windsor, London and New York City.
In some cities The Lawyers’ Show has become an annual staple of a theatres season but after premiering the genre in Hamilton in 1983, it was not until 17 years later and through a collaboration with Theatre Aquarius, Hamilton’s only professional theatre company, that the Lawyers Show returned to delight and thrill audiences and provide a creative outlet for its passionate legal community.
Proceeds from the Hamilton Lawyers Show go to supporting the The Lawyers’ Legacy for Children – Ray Harris Fund and Theatre Aquarius.
