Hamilton, ON – After a nationwide search, the National Centre for New Musicals (NCNM) at Theatre Aquarius is pleased to announce the selections for 2024/2025.
NCNM launched its first request for submissions in the fall of 2023 and received over 260 submissions – double the expected figure.
The curatorial team, a diverse group of twenty-four arts professionals hailing from every province and territory, was tasked with reading and grading all round-one submissions. This team, representing various artistic disciplines and backgrounds, ensured a comprehensive and inclusive selection process.
Following the initial round, twenty-five pieces were advanced for further consideration by the esteemed advisory committee. This committee, led by co-chairs Michael Rubinoff (Olivier Award-winning and Tony-nominated producer who conceived the longest-running Canadian musical in Broadway history, Come From Away) and Lily Ling (Broadway: Hamilton, Hell’s Kitchen, How to Dance in Ohio, Moulin Rouge!), along with Theatre Aquarius Artistic Director Mary Francis Moore (MAGGIE by Johnny Reid and Matt Murray; world premiere at Theatre Aquarius, and American premiere at Goodspeed Opera House, world premiere of Tom Wilson’s Beautiful Scars), and Sean Mayes (Broadway: Hadestown, MJ: The Musical), played a pivotal role in the final selection process.
Rubinoff is filled with anticipation for the first round of this ambitious project: “The inaugural NCNM group of artists is comprised of exciting musical theatre writers championing a diverse and compelling collection of stories. I am eagerly looking forward to the NCNM playing a significant role in developing these new works and launching them to stages at home and around the world, bringing these unique and powerful narratives to life.”
“Lily and I have been energized by the submissions for this inaugural year of NCNM. It has given us great encouragement that so much new musical theatre work is happening in Canada, particularly with numerous voices and from varying perspectives within our community and country. We look forward to supporting these projects in their next stage!” says Mayes.
The national appetite for a bespoke developmental process has been encouraging to the team at NCNM. “We thought we were looking for two to three pieces. With the volume of applications and calibre of talent we’ve seen, we are delighted to announce that we’ve expanded that to five works, four in the development phase and one in the incubation phase,” says Moore.
With the leading support of the incite Foundation for the Arts and corporate and private donors, NCNM has selected five new musicals to support and develop over the upcoming year.
The pieces include:

Tom Wilson’s identity crisis began in earnest at the age of 4, when his mother looked him square in the eye and told him “There are secrets I know about you that I’ll take to my grave.” What she meant, and how he finally figured it out, is a topic the Canadian writer-musician explored to stunning effect in his best-selling 2017 novel, Beautiful Scars: Steeltown Secrets, Mohawk Skywalkers and the Road Home, and a 2022 documentary film of the same name. Now his gripping story is coming to the stage as a world-premiere musical created by Wilson and Shaun Smyth, under the direction of Mary Francis Moore.
Playing April 24 to May 11, 2024, at Theatre Aquarius in Hamilton, Ontario, the production brings together some of Canada’s most celebrated actors and musicians, with a powerfully evocative score by Wilson, a multi-award-winning musician/storyteller with decades of achievements as a writer, player and performer. It’s a tale of loss, love and forgiveness that will have you spellbound from the first note to the last.
And it’s all possible simply because a very young Wilson wanted to know why he didn’t look like anyone else in his family, and why he had a mother who appeared so much older than his friends’. His long and painful journey toward the truth took him from the blue-collar “Steeltown” of East Hamilton Mountain and up the St. Lawrence River to Kahnaw’a:ke Mohawk territory, where a generations-old secret lay waiting to be discovered.
The new musical has Sheldon Elter playing the part of the adult Tom, with Thompson Wilson as his younger self. Also in the cast are Kristi Hansen as his mother, Bunny; Brandon McGibbon as his father; George, Valerie Planche as Janie; Jeremy Proulx as Bear; and Phil Davis as the Indigenous Collaborator/Artist.
The live band is made up of Gary Craig, Dave Gray and Anna Ruddick. Rounding out the creative team are music director Bob Foster, set designer Jay Havens, costume designer Yolanda Skelton, lighting designer Kevin Fraser, sound designer Ranil Sonnadara and choreographer Barbara Kaneratonni Diabo.
The show is the latest project for Wilson —the culmination of the widespread acclaim he’s earned not just for Beautiful Scars the book and film, but also for his stellar writing and performing work with musical outfits like Junkhouse, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings and the JUNO Award-winning Lee Harvey Osmond (in which he’s joined by Cowboy Junkies founder Michael Timmins). In addition, he’s an accomplished painter who’s had pieces hung in in the Art Gallery of Burlington and along John Street in Hamilton (as part of a commission by the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences).
“I’m scared and scarred but I’ve survived,” Wilson writes in the book. With his compelling tale now about to take the leap into a vibrant three dimensions, it’s time to not just survive but thrive.
Tickets to Beautiful Scars the musical are $25 and up at www.theatreaquarius.org, or call the box office at (905) 522-7529.
Theatre Aquarius gratefully acknowledges support from its Season Sponsor, Donna Patterson, and the Title Sponsor for Beautiful Scars, The Slaight Family Foundation. The opening night partner on April 26 is Gowling WLG, and the community welcome party is hosted by Next Steps Planning with IPC Securities.

HAMILTON, ON — Artistic Director Mary Francis Moore and Executive Director Kelly Straughan announced Theatre Aquarius’ 2024/2025 season to an enthusiastic crowd at the first preview performance of Shirley Valentine on Wednesday evening. “We’ve come to play in our 51st season. Our all-star lineup has it all: clever comedy, biting satire, full-course fun, heart-mending humanity and lavish musicals,” said Moore. “We’ve assembled a dream team that reflects our world-class theatre and the calibre of the plays, and we’re excited to share more details in the coming months,” added Straughan. “We’re honoured to co-produce with Alberta Theatre Projects and The Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre and welcome Crow’s Theatre back to Hamilton.”
Billed as a “Slam Dunk,” the 51st season opens with Rajiv Joseph’s critically acclaimed comedy King James, in association with Alberta Theatre Projects. Told over twelve years, from LeBron James’ rookie season to an NBA Championship, King James is an intimate exploration of the place sports occupy in our lives and relationships. Crow’s Theatre returns to Theatre Aquarius after the successful run of Uncle Vanya in January 2024 with another smash hit, The Master Plan. Written by Michael Healey, The Master Plan is a biting satire about the stunning failure to build a smart city in Toronto. Adapted from award-winning writer and The Globe and Mail journalist Josh O’Kane’s best-selling book, Sideways: The City Google Couldn’t Buy, The Master Plan lampoons the corporate drama, epic personalities and iconic Canadian figures involved in the messy affair between Sidewalk Labs and Waterfront Toronto.
Mary Francis Moore will grant the wish of family theatregoers with the lavish spectacle A Christmas Story, The Musical, which she will direct. The musical is based on the famous Christmas movie favourite of the same name with a book by Joseph Robinette and music and lyrics by the powerhouse team behind Dear Evan Hansen, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. It’s a package of naughty and nice nostalgia to warm up audiences of all ages on even the coldest winter night.
Inspired by Princess Diana’s historic visit to Toronto’s Casey House in 1991, Nick Green‘s Casey and Diana is a tremendously moving portrait of the men at the heart of the AIDS crisis and their devoted caretakers. A co-production with The Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, Casey and Diana is one of this generation’s most talked-about new Canadian works. Fully Committed is a devastatingly funny one-act comedy that follows a day in the life of an out-of-work actor, Sam Peliczowski, who works at the red-hot reservation line at Manhattan’s number-one restaurant. Written by Becky Mode, the satire pokes fun at all the wannabes that coerce, threaten and bribe Sam to get the best seat in the house.
Closing out the slam dunk season is the irresistible Broadway musical Waitress, with a book by Jessie Nelson and music and lyrics by Grammy award-winner Sara Bareilles, based on the motion picture written by Adrienne Shelly. Waitress celebrates the power of friendship, dreams, the family we choose and the beauty of a well-baked pie. Audiences will leave Theatre Aquarius at the end of the season feeling full of the region’s best theatre. Moore and Straughan look forward to welcoming returning patrons and are eager to share the 2024/2025 season with new audiences. “We have it all: exceptional plays, stunning designs, beautiful music, and top-notch players from coast to coast to coast that bring their A-game to Theatre Aquarius. Find it all right here in Hamilton!”

Hamilton, ON – On Tuesday March 5, the team at Theatre Aquarius will celebrate the $100,000 Resilient Communities Fund grant they received from the provincial government’s Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) that was used to improve the technological infrastructure at Theatre Aquarius.
“Theatre Aquarius is an iconic facility that delivers enriching art experiences that make a difference to the people of Hamilton,” said Neil Lumsden, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport. “That’s why funding that my ministry is providing through the OTF is so important. Our government wants to ensure that arts organizations and artists continue to be recognized for the valuable contributions they make to the quality of life in our province’s communities.”
“Congratulations to Theatre Aquarius for receiving their grant through the Ontario Trillium Foundation. Theatre Aquarius has been a staple in our Hamilton community since its founding in 1973,” said Sarah Jama, MPP for Hamilton Centre. “Making the theatre accessible to all audiences while encouraging young people to develop a life-long love and appreciation for the arts is essential for a thriving community. May Theatre Aquarius continue to entertain and inspire Hamiltonians through dramatic arts for years to come.”
The project has helped the organization recover and rebuild post-pandemic by updating technological infrastructure including purchasing new computers, phones, ticket scanners and updating software by moving to cloud-based systems. These enhancements are expected to help safeguard the Theatre from any further disruptions to its operations.
“The pandemic revealed that we were unprepared for changes from a technology standpoint,” says Theatre Aquarius’ Executive Director Kelly Straughan, “The grant from OTFs Resilient Communities Fund has truly made our organization more resilient and ready for any future challenges.”
Theatre Aquarius is Hamilton’s only professional theatre with 6 Mainstage productions a season that entertain, enlighten, invigorate, and challenge our audiences. Theatre Aquarius owns and manages the building at 190 King William Street which houses a fully equipped 700 seat theatre and the 125 seat Norman and Louise Haac Studio Theatre.
The Ontario Trillium Foundation’s (OTF) mission is to build healthy and vibrant communities across Ontario. As an agency of the Government of Ontario, and one of Canada’s leading granting foundations, last year, OTF invested over $110M into 1,022 community projects and partnerships. Hamilton, ON. January 8, 2024 — The smash-hit Crow’s Theatre production of Uncle Vanya opens at Theatre Aquarius on January 12, 2024, and runs until January 27, 2024. The spellbinding new adaptation by Liisa Repo-Martell, and directed by Crow’s Theatre Artistic Director Chris Abraham, breathes new life to into one of Anton Chekhov’s theatrical masterpieces. The original production played to sold-out houses at Crow’s Theatre in 2022 and is headed to Mirvish after its run at Aquarius.
“I am delighted to welcome Artistic Director Chris Abraham and his Crow’s Theatre team to Aquarius with their thrilling production of Uncle Vanya. Captivating, funny, tender and tragic, Uncle Vanya is simply a must see for theatre lovers,” said Mary Francis Moore, Artistic Director of Theatre Aquarius.
In the waning days of Czarist Russia, Ivan “Vanya” Voinitsky, and his niece, Sonya, toil ceaselessly to run their family estate. After retiring, Sonya’s father, a celebrated professor, returns to the estate with his young, glamorous wife. When he announces his plans to sell the land and evict them all, passions explode, and lives come undone.
A dazzling cast breathes new life into Chekhov’s masterpiece in a new adaptation by Liisa Repo-Martell. Brimming with emotional intensity, comedic genius, and tragic weight, this Crow’s Theatre commission and world-premiere adaptation provides an up-close encounter with a classic of world drama that every theatre lover must see.
CRITICAL PRAISE FOR THE 2022 CROW’S THEATRE PRODUCATION
“As this show, with its diverse cast, reminds us, Chekhov transcends borders and national identities. He speaks to universal human experience and, in the voice of Astrov, to our fervent hope for a better future.” – The Globe and Mail
“Uncle Vanya at Crow’s Theatre avoids those pitfalls of Chekhov in translation — dryness, aloofness, stasis. Liisa Repo-Martell’s adaptation is alluring and right at home in the mouths of director Chris Abraham’s actors; this Vanya, though set firmly in Czarist Russia, feels relatable and even startlingly contemporary, affirming the timelessness of the themes Chekhov explored in his writing.”– Intermission Magazine
“This beautifully sensitive production and deeply felt adaptation of Uncle Vanya is like a light in the world. Chris Abraham’s direction illuminates the ache of yearning, of disappointment and lost love.” – The Slotkin Letter

Hamilton, ON October 16, 2023 — Canadian actor Jake Epstein, also known as “that guy from Degrassi,” brings some “Razzle Dazzle” and other showtunes to his musical memoir Boy Falls From The Sky, playing at Theatre Aquarius from October 25 to November 4.
Boy Falls From The Sky had a smash sell-out run as part of the Mirvish season at the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto last year. This cabaret-style musical, told by Epstein and backed by a three-piece band, is filled with stories that are both hilarious and heartfelt about Epstein’s life in the spotlight.
“Something will make you laugh, or make your heart ache, or make you reconsider your perspective. Throw in some powerful performances, Epstein’s innate charm and humour, and the palpable love and care that emanates from all aspects of the production and you’ve got a prime example of what makes storytelling (and live theatre) so special.” – Broadway World
“Boy Falls From the Sky” is finely crafted by Epstein and director/co-creator Robert McQueen, nary a song or story out of place. At a brisk 80 minutes, you only wish the natural storyteller that is Epstein could go on forever.” – Toronto Star
Jake Epstein’s living his childhood dreams, having starred in the US National Tours of Spring Awakening and American Idiot, played Spider-Man on Broadway and originated the lead role of Carole King’s husband – Gerry Goffin in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. But the thing about dreams is, they don’t always go as planned. Epstein shares the rejection, stage fright and heartbreak through song and story behind a seemingly successful career in this showbiz tell-all. Laden with musical numbers, Boy Falls From The Sky is a story for anyone who’s ever tried to go after their dreams.

HAMILTON, June 1, 2023 – Theatre Aquarius is proud to announce the launch of the National Centre for New Musicals (NCNM). NCNM will play a pivotal role in nurturing, developing, and advancing Canadian musical theatre projects, stories, and voices.
Championed by the leadership team of Theatre Aquarius Artistic Director Mary Francis Moore and Executive Director Kelly Straughan and bolstered by a visionary and bold inaugural Advisory Committee, NCNM is set to revolutionize the national and international musical theatre landscape, offering unparalleled opportunity for both established and emerging Canadian composers, lyricists, book writers and theatre artists.
Funding commitments totalling $1 million are secured for NCNM‘s first five years as part of the total budget of $2 million. This will firmly establish NCNM and ultimately Canada as a leading player in the field of musical theatre development and provide an unmatched platform for growth and long-term success.
NCNM will support projects at various stages in the continuum of development – from early-stage concepts to previously workshopped or showcased work. Guided by a distinguished Advisory Committee comprised of celebrated theatre practitioners, NCNM will provide mentorship and pathways for new artists and projects.
“We are thrilled to position ourselves as a launchpad for national and international opportunities,” says Theatre Aquarius Artistic Director Mary Francis Moore, “Aquarius has a storied history of talent development; and with our dynamic team, exciting partnership opportunities and our proximity to Toronto and New York, NCNM is poised to solidify Hamilton firmly on the ‘arts and culture’ map nationally and internationally.”
“To showcase exceptional new Canadian musicals within and beyond our borders, we need a theatre to nurture and foster their development. I am elated to see Theatre Aquarius become the national home for the development and growth of new Canadian musicals,” explains Michael Rubinoff, Co-Chair of the NCNM Advisory Committee, and a pioneering force in new Canadian musical theatre development.
As part of its mission, NCNM will actively cultivate and strengthen new and diverse voices by ensuring that artists and creators are provided with mentorship and consultation to maximize their potential for success in the genre.
Moore and Rubinoff are joined by NCNM Advisory Committee Co-Chair Lily Ling. Ling is a Chinese-Canadian Music Director, Conductor, Pianist and Educator, and a strong advocate for mentorship and outreach. She was the first female music director and the first person of East Asian descent to conduct Hamilton and is the current interim Music Director and Conductor for Moulin Rouge on Broadway. The Advisory Committee is also comprised of Canadian Music Director, Conductor and Educator Sean Mayes whose Broadway credits include Assistant Conductor of MJ and Associate Conductor of Hadestown. Additionally, Mayes was the Conductor of the all-Canadian premiere of The Colour Purple as well as Musical Supervisor of the Finnish Premiere of Come From Away.
“The musical MAGGIE packed houses, and proved that the timing is right to shine the spotlight on Canadian talent. NCNM will provide the innovation and resources to catapult Canadian musical theatre creators to an entirely new level,” says Theatre Aquarius Executive Director Kelly Straughan. “The region’s incredible support is instrumental to the exciting and historic plans for new musical theatre development in Canada, right here at Aquarius, and this is just the beginning.”
“I am so proud of the long established and emerging cultural landscape that is a crucial part of the City of Hamilton. The launch of NCNM at Aquarius will have a significant positive impact on both tourism and economic development in our city,” says Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horwath. “This announcement of the NCNM as a musical theatre incubator is tremendously exciting and we can’t wait to welcome the international musical theatre world to Hamilton.”
